How many porta potties does my construction site need?

A construction site with 20 or fewer workers needs at least 1 toilet under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51. From 21 to 199 workers, plan 1 seat and 1 urinal for every 40 workers. At 200 or more workers, plan 1 seat and 1 urinal for every 50. Each standard porta potty has both a seat and a urinal.

Workers on siteOSHA minimum (Table D-1)Standard porta potties
1 to 201 toilet1 standard unit
21 to 401 seat + 1 urinal per 40 workers1 to 2 units
41 to 802 seats + 2 urinals2 units
81 to 1203 seats + 3 urinals3 units
121 to 1991 seat + 1 urinal per 404 to 5 units
200+1 seat + 1 urinal per 50 workersWorkers ÷ 50, rounded up

The legal minimum comes from OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(c), Table D-1. Missouri has no state OSHA plan for private employers, and Illinois’ plan covers public employees only, so federal OSHA applies on both sides of the river (OSHA state plans).

Lawson’s recommendation: crews of 12 or more on long shifts often add a second unit, because one unit means a line at lunch. That is a comfort call, not a legal requirement. Use the jobsite porta potty calculator to check your count.

How is a jobsite porta potty cleaned and serviced?

A jobsite porta potty is serviced once a week as part of every 28-day cycle. The technician pumps the waste tank, scrubs and disinfects the inside, adds fresh deodorizer and restocks toilet paper and sanitizer. Large crews and hot months can add a second weekly service for an extra charge.

  1. Waste tank vacuumed empty and recharged with deodorizing chemical.
  2. Seat, urinal, walls and door handle sprayed and wiped.
  3. Toilet paper and hand sanitizer refilled.
  4. Unit checked for damage, tipping risk and a working door latch.

St. Louis summers run hot: the July average high at Lambert is about 90°F. From July through September, crews of 15 or more often switch to twice-weekly service to keep odor down. From about November to March, units get antifreeze so the tank does not freeze.

How does 28-day billing work for long-term rentals?

Long-term porta potty rentals are billed every 28 days, not by calendar month. The first cycle includes a one-time delivery and pickup fee; every later cycle is the unit rate plus tax. The rental renews automatically until you call for pickup, so one phone call stops billing.

  • Unit rate: starts at $199 per 28 days for a standard unit with weekly service.
  • Delivery and pickup: one-time $49 to $100, depending on distance from Florissant.
  • Extra service: a second weekly cleaning is quoted per visit.
  • Payment: card on file charged each cycle, or net-30 for approved contractor accounts.

A job that runs 5 weeks is two cycles. Plan the call for pickup a few days before your last day so the unit leaves before the next cycle starts. More detail is in the porta potty pricing guide.

Where should the jobsite porta potty go?

Place a jobsite porta potty on flat, firm ground within about 15 feet of where the truck can park, so the driver can roll it in and the service truck can reach it every week. Keep it off the street unless you have a right-of-way permit, and away from trenches, swing radius and low spots.

A standard unit is 43.5 inches wide and 47 inches deep, so it needs a gate opening of at least 48 inches. For street or sidewalk placement in Florissant, call City Hall; on St. Louis County roads, check St. Louis County right-of-way permits. The permit and placement guide covers the rest.

Working on an upper floor? Ask for a crane-lift unit with lifting hooks. Standard units do not come on a skid and should not be lifted.

Questions people ask before they book

Quick answers to what renters ask right before they commit, covering delivery timing, placement, the full price and how pickup works. For anything else, a real person picks up at (314) 408-7740, and the porta potty rental FAQ covers the rest.

Can you deliver a porta potty to my jobsite today?

Same-day delivery is possible on most weekdays when you call in the morning. A same-day fee of $100 to $150 applies and is quoted up front. Call (314) 408-7740 and dispatch confirms the slot while you are on the phone.

How many porta potties do I need for 4 workers?

One standard porta potty covers a crew of up to 20 under OSHA. A 4-person crew needs 1 unit with weekly service. Add a handwashing station if the crew handles paint, concrete or food.

Do I have to call for pickup, or is it automatic?

Pickup on long-term rentals is not automatic. The rental renews every 28 days until you call or text for pickup. We remove the unit within 1 to 2 business days of your request.

What if my project runs a month and a week?

A project of 5 weeks is two 28-day cycles. If you know the end date, tell us when you book and we can schedule pickup before the second cycle starts.

Can I get a porta potty with a sink for the crew?

A unit with a foot-pump sink inside works well for small crews. Larger crews do better with a standard unit plus a two-station handwashing station starting at $75.

Do you lock the units?

A hasp for your own padlock can be added so the public cannot use the unit after hours. Give the service technician a key or the combination so weekly cleaning is never missed.

Do you set up net-30 billing for contractors?

Contractors can apply for net-30 terms paid by check or ACH. Approval usually takes 1 to 2 business days. Until then, the first order runs on a card.

What happens in winter?

From about November through March, jobsite units get antifreeze in the tank so waste does not freeze. The service schedule stays weekly. Handwash stations with water are swapped for sanitizer stands during hard freezes.
