How many accessible porta potties does an event need?

Under the 2010 ADA Standards, section 213.2, at least 5% of the portable toilets in each cluster must be accessible, and never fewer than 1. In practice, every group of up to 20 units needs 1 wheelchair-accessible unit. Portable toilets used only by construction workers on a jobsite are exempt (section 203.2).

Source: U.S. Access Board, 2010 ADA Standards. This is the legal baseline, not legal advice; your venue or permit office may ask for more. Lawson’s recommendation: include 1 accessible unit at any event with older guests, even a private party, because it also helps parents with small children.

What makes a porta potty wheelchair-accessible?

A wheelchair-accessible porta potty has a ground-level floor with no step, a door at least 32 inches wide, grab bars beside the seat, and enough floor space for a wheelchair to turn. The unit we rent is built like the PolyJohn Comfort XL: 62 inches wide, 62 inches deep and 91 inches tall.

Specs from the PolyJohn Comfort XL product page, which calls the unit wheelchair accessible. We call it wheelchair-accessible, not “ADA-compliant,” because compliance depends on placement too: a firm, level path and a clear turning space at the door.

Where should an accessible porta potty be placed?

Place an accessible porta potty on firm, level ground with a clear path from parking and seating: pavement, packed gravel or short, dry grass. Leave a flat 60-inch circle in front of the door for turning. Avoid curbs, slopes and soft lawns, which make a roll-in floor useless for a wheelchair.

The cabin is 62 inches wide, so it needs a wider gate or open access. Put it at the end of a row, closest to the main path, and mark it with the accessibility symbol so guests find it.

Questions people ask before they book

Each answer below is short on purpose, so you can decide fast and get back to planning your job or event. If your situation is unusual or your site is hard to reach, call (314) 408-7740 and describe it, or check the complete porta potty FAQ.

Can a wheelchair user get into a standard porta potty?

A standard unit has a raised floor and a narrow door, so most wheelchair users cannot use it. Book a wheelchair-accessible unit instead.

Is the accessible unit bigger inside?

The cabin is about 62 × 62 inches with more than 16 square feet of floor, roughly twice the floor of a standard unit.

Do churches and schools rent accessible units?

Churches, schools and parks often rent one or more accessible units for festivals, fish fries and field days, sometimes alongside standard units.

Does the accessible unit have a sink?

Most accessible units have hand sanitizer. Add a handwashing station at accessible height nearby for food events.
